Calling all head teachers, aspiring head teachers and teacher leaders

Education Scotland is inviting teachers keen to develop their knowledge and skills of leadership and build on their career to add to their professional learning.

Applications are now open for four exciting programmes starting in July this year - Into Headship, Towards Headship, In Headship and the Teacher Leadership Programme. The headship programmes are available for teachers who either wish to progress to becoming a head teacher or for existing heads to further their professional learning. The Teacher Leadership Programme is open to all post-probationer teachers who aim to enhance their knowledge of enquiry and leadership of learning and teaching.

Towards Headship supports experienced depute heads towards becoming a headteacher. The 6-12 month programme provides an opportunity to enhance continuous professional learning in the area of school leadership. By taking part in this programme, participants will be able to evidence professional growth and learning which will support their journey towards their first head teacher post. The programme is for teachers who already hold the GTCS Standard for Headship and focuses on their strategic self-awareness as they reflect on their leadership and participants co-construct the programme.

If you aspire to become a head teacher in the next few years, the next stage is the Into Headship course. This is Scotland’s national qualification for head teachers which focuses on the specificity of headship and the strategic  knowledge, understanding and skills required. On successful completion of Into Headship, participants will be awarded the GTCS Standard for Headship, which, since August last year, has become mandatory for all new head teachers. Throughout the 12-18 month programme, participants will have the support of a head teacher mentor and a local authority co-ordinator.

Following on from Into Headship - In Headship - is a postgraduate qualification for new head teachers which supports them to advance and continue to build the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding needed for the job. It helps to enable those in the transition through the early stages of headship to develop as effective strategic leaders. In Headship, which lasts between 12 -18 months, is open to those who have successfully gained the Standard for Headship and are new to their head teacher post.

The Teacher Leadership Programme is a developmental programme informed by the GTCS Standard for Career Long Professional learning which supports teachers to enhance their confidence and skills. The programme, made up of at least 3 online events, allows teachers to develop leadership skills that they previously may not have known existed within themselves. Participants are supported to take an enquiring approach to developing an aspect of learning and teaching of their choosing as appropriate for their learners.

Through these programmes, our teachers can grow and progress their professional learning – developing further skills in learning, teaching and leading which will, in turn, benefit children and young people in Scotland.

All four courses are funded by the Scottish Government and, at present, are delivered online due to COVID-19 restrictions.

If you are looking for a new career commitment to specialise and progress within your role, please get in touch with Education Scotland. The application process is open until Friday 16 April and further information can be found on the Education Scotland Professional Learning website.
