Education Scotland has published a new Gaelic Language Plan, which aims to support the increase of children and young people learning, speaking and using Gaelic across the country, as outlined in the National Gaelic Language Plan 2018 – 2023.

Building on previous successes, the plan continues to be ambitious for Gaelic and, in collaboration with all stakeholders and learners, will contribute to enabling a sustainable future for Gaelic language in Scotland.

This Gaelic Language Plan was being prepared prior to the announcement of the educational reform in Scotland. As such, we recognise that the results of the consultation on education reform will necessitate changes to our Gaelic Language Plan in the future.

Gayle Gorman, HM Chief Inspector and Chief Executive of Education Scotland, said sustaining the growth of high-quality education is fundamental to securing Gaelic's future.

“We need more of our learners to be going into post-school destinations fluent, with a sense of identity, responsibility and pride in Gaelic. They need to be equipped with the right skills and capacities to contribute to employment, the economy, culture as well as intergenerational transmission of Gaelic. We also need to continue to grow Gaelic (Learners), and the understanding of Gaelic as part of inclusion and diversity within the English medium sector to also contribute to the future of Gaelic.”

Education Scotland will support quality and improvement for learners of and in Gaelic by:

  • Continuing to give first-hand evaluations through inspection to support improvement of Gaelic in schools and other establishments, share effective practice identified in inspections and influence policy.
  • Continuing to work with stakeholders, offering high-quality support, guidance, resources and professional learning to support learning, teaching and assessment.
  • Collaborating with partners, through professional development activities, to strengthen curriculum design resulting in improved outcomes for learners.

Since the release of the first Gaelic Language Plan, there has been a welcome expansion of Gaelic in schools, more use of technology for delivering learning in and through Gaelic, enactment of new legislation and a better understanding of immersion.

This plan will enable change and support practitioners to better support Scotland’s learners in Gaelic Education.

Tha Foghlam Alba am Plana Gàidhlig ùr fhoillseachadh, a tha ag amas air taic a thoirt do mheudachadh ann an àireamh de chloinn agus daoine òga ag ionnsachadh, a’ bruidhinn agus a’ cleachdadh na Gàidhlig air feadh na dùthcha, mar a tha air a mhìneachadh ann am Plana Cànain Nàiseanta Gàidhlig 2018 – 2023.

A’ togail air soirbheasan a rinneadh roimhe, tha am plana fhathast àrd-amasach airson na Gàidhlig agus, ann an co-obrachadh leis an luchd-ùidh agus luchd-ionnsachaidh air fad, cuidichidh e ri bhith a’ comasachadh seasmhachd don Ghàidhlig ann an Alba san àm ri teachd.

Bhathar ag ullachadh a’ Phlana Ghàidhlig seo mus deach ath-leasachadh foghlaim ann an Alba a chur an cèill. Mar sin, tha sinn ag aithneachadh gum feumar atharrachaidhean a dhèanamh air a’ Phlana Ghàidhlig againn mar thoradh air a’ cho-chomhairleachadh air ath-leasachadh foghlaim san àm ri teachd.

“Feumaidh sinn barrachd den luchd-ionnsachaidh againn a bhith a’ dol gu cinn-uidhe às dèidh na sgoile fileanta agus le faireachdainn de dhearbh-aithne, dleastanas agus moit sa Ghàidhlig. Feumaidh na sgilean agus na comasan cearta a bhith aca gus cur ri cosnadh, ris an eaconamaidh, ri cultar agus ri tar-chur na Gàidhlig eadar na ginealaichean. Feumaidh sinn cuideachd cumail oirnn a’ fàs Gàidhlig (Luchd-ionnsachaidh), agus tuigse air a’ Ghàidhlig mar phàirt de in-ghabhail agus iomadachd ann an roinn meadhan na Bheurla cuideachd gus cur ri seasmhachd na Gàidhlig san àm ri teachd.”

Bheir Foghlam Alba taic do chàileachd is leasachadh do luchd-ionnsachaidh agus sa Ghàidhlig le bhith:

  • A’ leantainn oirnn le bhith a’ toirt seachad measaidhean pearsanta tro sgrùdadh gus taic a thoirt do leasachadh na Gàidhlig ann an sgoiltean agus ionadan eile, a’ co-roinn cleachdadh èifeachdach air a chomharrachadh ann an sgrùdaidhean agus a’ toirt buaidh air poileasaidh.
  • A’ leantainn air adhart ag obair le luchd-ùidh, a’ tabhann taic, stiùireadh, goireasan agus ionnsachadh proifeiseanta de dh’àrd-chàileachd gus taic a thoirt do dh’ionnsachadh, teagasg agus measadh.
  • A’ co-obrachadh le com-pàirtichean tro ghnìomhan leasachaidh proifeiseanta, gus deilbh curraicealaim a neartachadh, a leanas gu builean nas fheàrr airson luchd-ionnsachaidh.

Bhon a thàinig a’ chiad Phlana Gàidhlig a-mach, thathar air fàilte a chur air leasachadh na Gàidhlig ann an sgoiltean, barrachd cleachdadh teicneòlais airson ionnsachadh tron Ghàidhlig a lìbhrigeadh, reachdas ùr achdachadh agus tuigse nas fheàrr fhaighinn mu dheidhinn bogadh sa chànan.

Leigidh am plana seo le atharrachadh agus bheir e taic do luchd-cleachdaidh gus taic nas fheàrr a thoirt do luchd-ionnsachaidh na h-Alba ann am Foghlam Gàidhlig.
