How to use this learning and assessment resource to improve practice

Primary teachers delivering 1+2 language experiences can use this resource to support their planning from the first to the second curriculum levels in modern languages. The nine parts of this resource provide guidance on building in depth and progression as learners become more sophisticated in their use and capabilities in the target language.

The resource contains the following downloads:

  1. An overview of how children would typically make progress in language learning, together with a set of reflective questions for use during planning stages in particular. These also form a useful checklist for teachers.
  2. Updated learning maps for first and second level to support embedding target language into a selection of typical learning experiences in the primary curriculum. Contains a closer look at evidence of progression from first to second level within the theme of ‘Healthy Eating’.
  3. An ‘at-a-glance’ poster on how language learning relates to the four capacities.
  4. Expected outcomes for each stage P1-P7.
  5. Guidance on the incorporation of learning about cultural standards in the country/countries where the target language is spoken, through the primary stages.
  6. Guidance on how to ensure that embedded classroom routine language contains depth and progression, through the primary stages.
