What is this?

​This is the first phase of development of a Scottish specific learning and teaching toolkit which will grow to include more Scotland specific content. This is being undertaken with the support of the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF).
The toolkit provides an accessible summary of global educational research on the impact of interventions for 5 - 16 year olds. This is part of the support to education practitioners in Scotland and is designed to inform intervention and investment decision making to tackle inequity and to close the poverty-related attainment gap.

Who is this for?

​This is aimed at education leaders and practitioners working with learners and their families, especially those affected by poverty.

What is the toolkit?

The EEF Teaching and Learning Toolkit is an accessible summary of educational research designed to inform discussions on the most effective approaches to improving attainment.

It contains 34 teaching approaches and interventions, each summarised in terms of their average impact on attainment, the strength of the evidence supporting them and their cost.

A Scottish specific version of the toolkit is being developed and an initial site is now available. This will be developed further and will grow to include Scotland specific content.

Why is this research useful?

It is important that teachers are supported with information about what has worked – and, just as importantly, what has not, from around the world.

This type of research can help practitioners and education leaders identify which ways of spending time and money are likely to lead to the biggest possible increases in children and young peoples’ learning. It is important to note that not every way of spending budget will lead to the same increase in attainment. Educational research can help you make the decisions about which interventions are likely to lead to the best outcomes for children and young people.

The research summarised in the Toolkit suggests that different ways of using the Pupil Equity Fund are likely to have very different impacts on attainment and in different time periods.

How should the Toolkit be used?

The aim of the Toolkit is to support schools and teachers to make their own informed choices and adopt a more ‘evidence based’ approach; the research evidence it contains is a supplement to, rather than a substitute for, professional judgement.

The summaries in the Toolkit combine evidence from a range of different research studies into a single average for each area. This average will not necessarily be the impact of this approach in your school.

Applying findings from educational research in new contexts requires due consideration. Much depends on your school, your teachers, your learners and the educational outcomes that you want to improve. Therefore, it is crucial to use the Toolkit alongside on-going evaluations of the impact of the decisions you make, to ensure that the approaches you use are having the desired effect.

Who put the Toolkit together?

The toolkit was created by the Sutton Trust and Durham University and developed by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF). The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) is an independent grant-making charity dedicated to raising the attainment of disadvantaged pupils by building and sharing evidence of what is effective to improve learning.

How will the Toolkit be developed to become Scottish specific?

The Learning and Teaching Toolkit development will continue to evolve and a future version is likely to include links to related projects in Scotland; references to and summaries of Scottish based research; other evidence bases and exemplars.
