This resource has been
produced to support staff in developing their understanding of progression
within the experiences and outcomes. It
identifies within each organiser the key milestones and building blocks that
learners should know before moving on to the next stage of learning. Numeracy
and mathematics organisers are not taught in isolation from each other and
knowledge in one organiser may be required to progress in other organisers.
There is also a suggested
professional learning activity which facilitates discussion in relation to
progression. This is a sort card activity for both the milestones and the
building blocks. This activity would be ideal for a cross sector professional
learning session, a department or a group of colleagues.
This resource has been created to deepen practitioners' knowledge and understanding of progression within the experiences and outcomes for numeracy and mathematics.

The National Numeracy and Mathematics Progression Framework is arranged by the Curriculum for Excellence organisers.
A professional learning activity has been designed to promote dialogue about progression in numeracy and mathematics. It includes a set of sort cards for all key milestones and building blocks for each of the numeracy and mathematics organisers.
Working in groups, practitioners can discuss and decide on the order of the milestone cards for the progression pathway, reflecting on current classroom practice. They can then organise the building block cards to show which of the milestones they refer to.
The professional dialogue generated by the activity will support understanding of standards and progression.
