What is this?

Tha an gnìomh ionnsachaidh seo a’ toirt taic do chlann tuigse fhaighinn mu dè a tha e a’ ciallachadh còraichean a bhith aca. Cleachdaidh clann sgrìobhadh meòrachail agus dealbhadh mac-meanmnach gus sgrùdadh mar a tha a bhith a’ toirt a-steach còraichean chloinne air beatha na cloinne a leasachadh.

Dèan conaltradh ris an luchd-ionnsachaidh mun mhothachadh a tha aca air Cunnradh nan Nàiseanan Aonaichte air Còraichean Chloinne (UNCRC) – ‘còraichean chloinne’.

Aontaich dòigh ris a’ chloinn air a bhith a’ cumail cunntas air agus ag ionnsachadh briathrachas ùr.

Bruidhinn ris a’ chloinn mu chòraichean a tha co-cheangailte ris an ionnsachadh aca air a’ Ghàidhlig agus tro mheadhan Gàidhlig. Bu chòir dhut seo a dhèanamh gus an cuideachadh ath-cheangal a dhèanamh ri adhbhar agus luach na Gàidhlig ann am foghlam, airson an ama ri teachd aca agus an tabhartas luachmhor aca ann an ath-bheothachadh a’ chànain. Is dòcha gur e cuid de na molaidhean:

Artaigil 8 Tha a’ chòir agad air dearbh-aithne – còir air ainm, nàiseantachd agus ceangalan teaghlaich, a bu chòir urram fhaighinn. Tha cànan agus cultar nam pàirtean riatanach den dearbh-aithne againn.

Artaigil 12 Tha a’ chòir agad do bheachd a thoirt seachad, agus tha a’ chòir aig inbhich a bhith ag èisteachd agus a’ dèiligeadh ri seo ann a dòigh chudromach an uair a bhios iad a’ tighinn gu co-dhùnaidhean.

Artaigil 15 Tha a’ chòir agad a bhith a’ coinneachadh ri caraidean agus a dhol an sàs ann am buidhnean, cho fada ’s nach cuir seo bacadh air daoine eile a bhith a’ mealtainn an còraichean.

Artaigil 28 Tha a’ chòir agad air foghlam bun-sgoile, a bu chòir a bhith an-asgaidh. Bu chòir do sgoiltean urram a thoirt dhut agus do bhrosnachadh chun na h-ìre as àirde de fhoghlam air a bheil thu comasach.

Artaigil 29 Bu chòir dhan fhoghlam agad do chuideachadh a bhith a’ cleachdadh agus a’ leasachadh do thàlantan agus do chomasan. Bu chòir dha cuideachd do chuideachadh gu ionnsachadh a bhith beò gu sìtheil, an àrainneachd a dhìon agus urram a thoirt do dhaoine eile.

Artaigil 30 Tha a’ chòir agad do chultar, do chànan agus do chreideamh fhèin a chur an gnìomh – no gin sam bith dhiubh a roghnaicheas tu. Tha dìon sònraichte air cànanan dùthchasail a thaobh na còrach seo.

Dh’fhaodadh clann an ionnsachadh mu chòraichean chloinne a cho-roinn le feadhainn eile san sgoil no sa choimhearsnachd. Dh’fhaodadh iad seo a dhèanamh aig co-thional sgoile, no le bhith ag obair còmhla ris an neach a tha an urra ri meadhanan sòisealta na sgoile, mar eisimpleir.

Celebrating my rights

Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) experiences and outcomes: First level

  • I can convey information, describe events or processes, share my opinions or persuade my reader in different ways. (LIT 1-28a/LIT 1-29a)

Purpose of the activity

To introduce children’s rights, and consider what that these mean to children learning through Gaelic.

Learning activity

Discuss learners’ awareness of United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) - ‘children’s rights’.

It may be useful to use the symbols poster on the website, Children and Young People’s Commissioner Scotland. This may be a clear and accessible way to explain rights to children, and discuss their ideas and personal experiences:

Agree with children a way of noting and learning new vocabulary.

Discuss with children rights that are connected to their learning of Gaelic and through the medium of Gaelic. You should do this to help them reconnect with the purpose and value of Gaelic in education, for their futures and their valuable contribution to reviving the language. Some suggestions may be:

Article 8 You have the right to an identity - the right to a name, a nationality and family ties, which should be respected. Language and culture are essential parts of our identity.

Article 12 You have the right to give your opinion, and for adults to listen and take it seriously when making decisions.

Article 15 You have the right to meet with friends and to join groups and organisations, as long as this does not stop other people from enjoying their rights.

Article 28 You have the right to a primary education, which should be free. Schools should respect your dignity and encourage the highest level of education of which you are capable.

Article 29 Your education should help you use and develop your talents and abilities. It should also help you learn to live peacefully, protect the environment and respect other people.

Article 30 You have the right to practice your own culture, language and religion - or any you choose. Indigenous languages have special protection in this right.

Invite children to create their own symbol poster detailing why particular rights are important to them and their learning in Gaelic Medium Education.

Extension activity

Children could share their learning on children’s right with others in the school or in the community. They could do this at an assembly, or by working with the school lead on social media, for example.

When writing to convey information, describe events or processes, share opinions or persuade readers in different ways:

  • Selects, organises and conveys information in different ways.
  • Uses vocabulary learned from a range of contexts and texts
    across the curriculum appropriately in writing.
  • Shares own viewpoint and makes use of vocabulary and language to attempt to persuade the reader as appropriate to the purpose.

When writing to describe and share experiences:

  • Writes about personal experiences in a correct sequence, using appropriate Gaelic vocabulary to describe feelings, thoughts and events.

Possible approach to assessing learning

Receiving examples of children learning at home will help show an understanding of how well children are applying their skills. Children’s writing could be reviewed to gauge progress with:

  • using language to fulfil purpose?
  • meeting the intended purpose and audience?
