Purpose of the activity

This activity helps children develop their language skills, and enjoyment of singing and drama.

Learning activity

Reflect on your favourite Gaelic songs.  Why do these appeal to you?  What do you know about the artists who sing them? Choose a song to learn. Research the original composer. When was the song written? Can you identify the story behind the song? You may find it helpful to use the following websites:

Present your findings in a format of your choosing.

Research for any Gaelic songs that are used as part of television programmes, dramas or films.  Who are the artists and why do you think these songs were chosen?

Think of a TV programme, drama or film that could have a Gaelic song as a theme tune.

Identify the song that would be suitable for this purpose and the artist you would choose to perform the song. Explain your choice.

Extension activity

Encourage parents/carers and children to take part in The Virtual Royal National Mòd in October 2020. There are wide ranges of competitions in which children may take part. More information can be found here:
