Purpose of the activity

To encourage children to include Gaelic in their daily routines.

Learning activity

This activity helps children develop their communication and language skills, and enjoyment of singing.

Encourage children and their parents to be aware of the Gaelic activities in which they can get involved out with school. One example, would be BBC ALBA programmes in which stories are read out aloud and singing is encouraged. Children enjoy telling and retelling familiar stories using puppets and props. They could draw and cut out the characters, or use items to represent different parts of the story. Encourage children to select their own props and use their imagination.

Encourage children to retell the story and sing songs using any props. Encourage them to use voices that express each character and their feelings. The repetition of the story and particular phrases is important. Encourage children where possible to involve a family member to join in to help build the story. When children feel confident, they may want to share their story in their own way. Provide tips to children to help them, for example a table or sofa can become an excellent puppet theatre!

As part of a routine, discuss with children how they have been using Gaelic beyond the school.

Extension activity

Ask children to think of interesting alternative endings to the story to support their creativity and imagination.

National Benchmarks

  • Participates in and recalls songs, rhymes and stories that support the learning of Gaelic language in a total immersion setting.

Possible approach to assessing learning

Questioning is a key part of good dialogue between practitioner and learner. You could ask children to retell aspects of the story and describe details in illustrations.

You could ask them to sing along with songs, including participating through actions.
