Me and my fluency: keeping a vlog or blog

- I regularly select and listen to or watch texts for enjoyment and interest, and I can express how well they meet my needs and expectations, and I can give reasons, with evidence, for my personal response.
- I can regularly select subject, purpose, format and resources to create texts of my choice, and am developing my own style. (LIT 3-01a / LIT 4-01a)
Purpose of the activity
This activity will help young people develop further their listening and talking skills in Gaelic. They will gain an insight into why it is important to use Gaelic out with school.
They will use their observations of others delivering messages to recreate their own presentation.
Learning activity
Talk to young people about the importance of using the language they are learning in as many contexts as they can. Ask young people to reflect on their use of Gaelic in school and out with school. They should be specific about the situations in which they use Gaelic.
Speakers and learners of Gaelic are being encouraged to use the hashtag #cleachdi – or #useit – plus the hashtag #gàidhlig when they communicate with others, be it in person, on social media, on email signatures or on their websites. Ask young people to share their experiences of this campaign, and how they do or could make a contribution to it.
Talk to young people about the importance of using Gaelic as much as they can, including out of school. Assist them in understanding how they can regain confidence in speaking Gaelic, should they be less confident as a result of being away school.
Ask young people to find out where and how they can use Gaelic out with the classroom and school. You may get more ideas for using Gaelic out with school here.
Ask young people to review these opportunities and to think how they may use these to hear and speak Gaelic. They should suggest how they could lead an opportunity for other learners in the school, or at primary, nursery or in the community generally.
Young people could keep a blog or a vlog of their experiences in using Gaelic. They should be encouraged to be creative and reflective in doing this. Their blog or vlog should be kept over a week. It should be used to talk about establishing good language-learning routines in speaking Gaelic.
As well as developing skills in Gaelic, talk to young people about the other skills they are developing.
Extension activity
Young people should be encouraged to provide an opportunity for other’s to use Gaelic on a regular basis.
National Benchmarks
Selects spoken texts regularly and describes, with an appropriate explanation, how well a text or source, including those from Gaelic media, meets needs and expectations.
Possible approach to assessing learning
Young people should reflect on what they did well and what they could improve. This feedback could be used to support you as teachers to assess children’s skills and identify next steps in learning.
