What is this?
This resource is designed to support practitioners to implement the 1+2 approach to language learning. The Scottish Government’s policy, Language Learning in Scotland: A 1+2 Approach, is aimed at ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn a modern language (known as L2) from P1 until the end of the broad general education (S3).
Additionally, each child is entitled to learn a second modern language (known as L3) from P5 onwards.
The policy should be fully implemented across the country by August 2021.
This resource contains:
- guidance and advice on introducing L2 from Primary 1 onwards
- audio files of typical classroom vocabulary in French, German, Spanish, Italian, Gaelic and Mandarin to support teachers to introduce the target language into daily routines
- video clips of teachers using classroom language, as well as delivering discrete language lessons
- learning maps to exemplify how to incorporate the teaching of the target language within some typical primary learning contexts
- guidance on L3.
