How to use this learning and assessment resource to improve practice?
How are the aims of YoYP 2018 relevant to schools and CLD groups?
YoYP provides an opportunity to change perceptions of young people, and to increase their voice in shaping their communities.
School is one of the environments in which children and young people spend the majority of their time. School not only has a significant impact on the later outcomes for children and young people but also impacts on their current wellbeing, sense of self and their contribution to society. Since children and young people are the main recipients of all that our schools offer and deliver, they should be actively involved and engaged in discussions and activities that affect how schools run. The aims of the Year of Young People can help schools to become more aware of the key role and the breadth of ways that young people can become engaged in shaping their communities (including the school community)
A whole school approach to pupil participation and engagement is needed to ensure that young people are not involved in a tokenistic way in decisions that affect them and in shaping the culture and ethos of the school. The whole school community including staff, parents, partners and children and young people should recognise the active part that children and young people can play in shaping their local community and in how they as a school community can facilitate this process.
The aims of the YoYP also fit well with the
national youth work outcomes and Celebrating young people and youth workers in the Year of Young People 2018 is a key priority of the
National Youth Work Strategy 2014-2019.
