​The aim of this resource is to support practitioners working with young children to improve their understanding and practice in using block play to support children’s learning.

Who is this for?

​This resource is for practitioners working with children in early learning and childcare settings and early stages of primary.

How to use this Learning and assessment resource to improve practice?

The resource can be used by individuals and groups of practitioners to support professional learning to develop understanding and support practice in relation to block play.

Links have been made throughout to theories of early learning that support the importance of block play. Links to further reading have been provided to deepen knowledge and understanding.

The resource outlines the different stages of block play and how this relates to children's development and learning.

The viewer should move between slides by clicking the mouse. Each slide is set to play automatically. Text and photographs will appear without having to manually move on.

You are invited to view the presentation and consider, individually or as a team, the following challenge questions.

  • In what ways does our environment support children's creativity, curiosity and inquiry? In what ways could it be improved?
  • How well do our practitioners allow time and space for children to be involved in their own schematic play?
  • How well do our practitioners support children to persevere with inquiry learning, start a project and continue it over time?
  • Look at how your blocks are displayed for children. What messages are children being given about size and mathematical relationships?
