How to use this exemplar to improve practice

This video, along with reflective questions, invite you to consider the impact of your own approach to involving young people in planning their learning. Watch the video and consider, individually or as a team, the following improvement questions:

  • How do you assist learners to be more specific in how they are evaluating their learning and agreeing what their next steps and learning targets are?
  • How can you improve the recording systems in place to ensure young people can understand the progression of their learning journey?
  • How can you improve your present systems to allow learners a bigger voice in improving the quality of  learning and teaching?
  • How do you work presently to help young people reflect on their learning and how can you improve this?

What was done?

This film demonstrates work done at Hazlehead Academy to improve feedback to learners. Staff established an assessment sheet to help pupils understand what they were trying to learn and why. As part of the process, pupils were encouraged to come up with their own ideas on how learning should be shaped.

What brought about the change?

Staff wanted learners to have a learning experience that was more interactive and gave learners greater control. Staff were keen that activities in learning were not always directed by them but could be led from the interests of pupils.

What was the impact?

By using better-quality interactions and completing personalised assessment materials, learners were able to take control of their learning without always needing to speak to staff. They could better discuss the areas they were keen to improve and could engage more readily with learning strategies in the classroom by suggesting their own ideas for exemplification.
