What is this?

This video shows how Deans Community High School develops children's skills, knowledge and understanding in the sciences and applies these across their learning.

This video along with reflective questions invite you to consider the impact of your own approach to planning learning. You are invited to watch the video and consider, individually or as a team, the following improvement questions:

  • When you are planning for learning to what extent do you also focus on the wider development of skills for learning, life and work?
  • Are you able to identify what those wider skills are?
  • Is there an opportunity to involve colleagues from across different curriculum areas in the planning and delivery of these skills?
  • What kind of mechanisms do you need to put in place to gather evidence and evaluate the impact of such approaches?

What was done? 

Pupils at Pilrig School developed skills for learning, life and work through involvement in the school hairdressing salon.

There was a desire on the part of the school to ensure that learners developed a comprehensive range of skills in relation to learning, life and work.

What was the impact?

Pupils have developed skills for learning, life and work. They can collaborate effectively. They have acquired a range of research, digital, communication and analytical skills.
