Slatan-tomhais Nàiseanta

Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) experiences and outcomes: Second level

Learning in this area sits within health and wellbeing as a responsibility for all.

As teachers plan the delivery of the learning activity, they should select relevant experiences and outcomes at second level literacy and Gàidhlig.

Purpose of the activity

Children are supported in developing their understanding of the concepts of compassion and connection.  This will emphasise for them the importance of helping each other to build strong relationships and care for one another. They do this through the medium of Gaelic.

This activity can be adapted for use at home, if children are learning remotely.

Learning activity

When designing learning activities, think about the range of learners and their individual circumstances. Use your own professional judgement, being particularly aware of sensitivities around this topic.

It will be helpful to consider, revisiting prior learning, chunking up new knowledge, teacher explanations/modelling, scaffolding, pupil practice and learning checks as and when possible.

Whenever you use content on a platform like YouTube, please cue the film you intend to play in advance, check it is the film you want to view, and skip the adverts.

The Compassionate and Connected Classroom’ is part of a wider set of resources entitled ‘The Compassionate and Connected Classroom and Community’ which consists of a curricular and professional learning resource.

This suite of resources aims to raise awareness of the potential impact of adversity and trauma in shaping outcomes for children and young people and provide support that can help mitigate the impact of these experiences.

You should read all the lesson plans for all tasks within the Compassionate and Connected Classroom before delivering these sessions to children. It is likely that you will wish to commit more time to complete all the themes and sessions within The Compassionate and Connected Classroom.

Theme 1, session 1 introduces children to the concepts of compassion and connection and emphasises the importance of helping each other to build strong relationships and care for one another.

National Benchmarks

Depending on a young person’s individual stage of development and their prior learning, children will be working towards these National Benchmarks, by the end of second level.

Learning in this area sits within health and wellbeing Responsibility for All, and the experiences and outcomes for literacy and Gàidhlig.

Possible approach to assessing learning

You know your learners well and can alter the expectations of outcomes for individuals in line with the benchmarks.

If children are working remotely, encourage them to share photographs, drawings or video clips describing their progress in learning. Receiving examples of learning at home from children will help you understand how they are managing the tasks you have set and enable you to provide feedback.
