Our community and the environment - secondary

What is this?

In this activity, young people consider a problem that affects their local area and look at how to inform and educate the local community on the issues involved.

For young people in S1/S2/S3

Your local council is looking for ways to encourage people to be more mindful of the environment when dealing with household waste. Currently, there is no requirement for households to recycle their waste, but this is going to change later on in the year. There have been recent problems in the area with fly tipping and pollution in local rivers. You have been asked to help the local community action group to make people aware of the extent of fly tipping and pollution in rivers in your area.

Learning activity

  • Design an attractive, annotated poster, leaflet or content for a website for your local community, outlining the benefits that recycling their household waste will bring and how people can manage this on a day-to-day basis.
  • In your poster, leaflet or information for the community website, highlight some of the current problems in your area with pollution, rubbish and unclean rivers. Give specific examples of how recycling will help to reduce these issues so that people in the area will take the idea of recycling more seriously.
