How to use this self-evaluation approach to improve practice

These video resources could be used as the focus of staff CLPL activity or by individual staff to consider the value of and approaches to RE in the Senior Phase. When using the resource, the following reflective questions may be helpful:

  • How far do these clips reflect the views of learners in your own establishment, and what factors might account for any differences?
  • How far does RE in the senior phase in your establishment continue to address the significant aspects of learning for RE?
  • How far does RE in the senior phase in your establishment build upon prior learning in RE gained by learners throughout the Broad General Education?
  • What are the key messages surrounding senior phase RE for learners, school leaders and parents and how do you communicate these?
  • To what extent does RE in the senior phase support a young person’s learning journey and prepare them for their life after school?
  • How far is depth, challenge and progression evident in your senior phase RE programme?
  • To what extent does senior phase RE build upon learning through This is Our Faith (TIOF) and TIOF Senior Phase?
  • How does your curriculum design support learners’ entitlement to RE throughout the senior phase.

The videos could be used with learners at any stage of learning to prompt discussion about the value of RE for them now and in the future. The prompt questions could be used to help learners to consider their own responses and then compare them with the views expressed by the learners in the videos. The videos could also be used as Career-long professional learning opportunities for staff and school leaders , enabling staff and school leaders to explore the value of senior phase RE for learners. The videos could also be shown at parents’ events to prompt discussion about the role of RE in the senior phase among parents. The videos would benefit from viewing in relation to the Significant aspects of learning for RERC contained in Education Scotland’s Assessing Progress and Achievement in RE documentation. This can assist in assessing how far the learners’ views capture the key features of the significant aspects of learning for RE.
