The Registrar of Independent Schools is an official of the Scottish Government, based in Education Scotland, responsible for maintaining a public register of independent schools which lists all registered independent schools in Scotland.

All independent schools in Scotland must be registered prior to opening. Enquiries on how to apply to register a new independent school should be directed to independentschools@educationscotland.gov.scot.

Individuals wishing to know more about the independent schools’ sector, and how it is regulated, should review the guidance for applicants, proprietors, and parents.

If an individual wishes to make a complaint, or raise a concern, about an independent school, such complaints and concerns should be first raised with the school. However, the Registrar of Independent Schools is available for advice should it be required and is available at: independentschools@educationscotland.gov.scot.
