Improving the quality of core physical education

Sets out the complementary roles and responsibilities across PEPAS. It provides a diagram of the significant aspects of learning (SAoL). These SAoL are the skills, knowledge, capabilities and attributes required to be physically literate and should be regularly revisited throughout a broad general education. A progressive, coherent learning experience should enable young people to access and be successful in physical activity and sport.

This document supplements the ‘improving quality’ document above by outlining the key elements of planning, learning, teaching and assessment, the key pedagogical skills and how to secure learner engagement.

How to use this resource

The purpose of these documents is to support professional learning and reflection on improving and embedding high quality learning in core physical education in your establishment. 

Identify which area you believe needs to be developed.  Read the documents and think about the following:

  • Are there any aspects highlighted which could transfer to your establishment/learning community?
  • What would be the next steps needed to improve in this area?
  • How do you ensure a connected pathway across PEPAS in your learning community?
  • In what ways do you support the young person to use their experience in physical education to then identify a participation and/or performance pathway in physical activity and/or sport?
  • Who might be involved in professional dialogue across PEPAS partnerships?
  • What would be the next steps needed to improve in this area?
