The Moderation Cycle

What is this?

The Moderation Cycle, which replaces the NAR Flowchart, outlines each stage of the moderation process and enables practitioners to develop a shared understanding of standards and expectations in the broad, general education.

Who is this for?

The Moderation Cycle is for all those involved in 3-15 education in Scotland. It is of relevance to practitioners from every sector, at any point in their career, regardless of their role or remit.

How to use this learning and assessment resource to improve practice

The Moderation Cycle is designed for use by practitioners to support their understanding of moderation. Engaging in the moderation process with colleagues will assist practitioners in arriving at valid and reliable decisions on learners’ progress towards, and achievement of, a level. Consequently, this resource will support the consistency of teachers’ professional judgement, both locally and nationally.

  • How confident are you in understanding the standards embedded within Experiences and Outcomes?
  • How robust and reliable is teacher professional judgement within your own establishment?
