Session 1 – What is Maths?

An introductory session looked at mathematical development from birth to primary school. It is relevant to all settings/schools and explores:

  • How mathematical abilities develop at different ages
  • Factors that may influence mathematical development
  • The importance of early mathematical abilities for lifelong outcomes.

Session 2 - Who is at risk?

This session is relevant to all settings/schools and:

  • Considered children at risk for mathematical difficulties
  • Provided greater insight into dyscalculia
  • Discussed common neuromyths related to dyscalculia and
  • Explored how mathematical learning difficulties relate to motivation and mathematical anxiety.

Session 3 - Improving outcomes

The final session looked at strategies for improving outcomes for children with mathematical learning difficulties.

It is relevant to all settings/schools and:

  • Highlighted a number of studies which show that having good mathematical abilities during early years has a positive impact on long term mathematical outcomes.
  • Discussed how young children’s mathematical development (aged 0-7 years old) can be supported at home and in the classroom.
  • Focused on which strategies are effective and
  • Discussed the latest evidence on how educational apps can support mathematical development.
