​In April 2017, Education Scotland commissioned an expert Scots Language practitioner to visit three primary and three secondary schools to observe the learning and teaching of Scots as part of Curriculum for Excellence (CfE). This report outlines the good practice observed during the visits and the positive impact for learners.

How to use this resource

Teachers and senior leaders in primary and secondary schools should read the report and consider the following challenge questions.

Local authority officers with responsibility for literacy and 1+2 implementation can consider the same questions in the wider local authority context.

  • To what extent does Scots Language feature in our curriculum currently?
  • How ready are we to introduce Scots to our curriculum, and where might we start?
  • How are learners benefiting from the Scots currently included in our curriculum? How do we know?
  • To what extent is Scots included in our implementation of 1+2, or our strategy for literacy? Should we include it in these areas of our work?​
