Graeme Logan has been announced as the Interim Chief Executive of Education Scotland. He will take up the position with immediate effect and will lead Education Scotland during the current period of reform.

Graeme has extensive experience in educational leadership and advisory roles. He moves to Education Scotland from his post as Director of Learning within the Scottish Government where he was responsible for various aspects of Scottish school education policy, such as raising attainment, health and wellbeing, and digital learning.

With a career spanning almost three decades in Scottish education, Graeme worked as a teacher, depute headteacher and headteacher across a number of schools and local authorities before stepping into national advisory roles within the Scottish Government.

Throughout this time he has had responsibility for supporting learning, teaching and assessment and he previously worked at Education Scotland on the implementation of Curriculum for Excellence as well as leading the programme of school inspections as the former interim HM Chief Inspector of Education.

Graeme Logan said: "I am both delighted and honoured to be appointed to the role of Interim Chief Executive of Education Scotland. I am keen to support further improvement in the experiences and outcomes of children, young people and adult learners across Scotland and I look forward to establishing the refocused Education Scotland with a primary focus on the curriculum."

Graeme will take over from the outgoing interim Chief Executive, Gillian Hamilton, who has been in post since March 2023.

Neil Rennick, Director-General for Education and Justice at Scottish Government said: "I am hugely grateful to Gillian for her work as interim Chief Executive of Education Scotland and before that as Depute Chief Executive and Strategic Director for Corporate Services and Governance. I wish her well in her new role.

“I am also grateful to Graeme for taking on the role of interim Chief Executive of Education Scotland at an important time for the organisation and for our wider education system. I know the team at Education Scotland will support Graeme in his new role and I look forward to continuing to work on our shared priorities.”

Graeme has previously worked in Education Scotland’s senior team as Assistant Director for Community Learning and Development (CLD) and then as Strategic Director for Schools and brings a wealth of educational and corporate experience to the interim Chief Executive role.
