Steven's learner journey

Steven achieved well in his broad general education at a combination of third and fourths levels across the curriculum.
He showed strengths in numeracy and technologies. Working with one of the school’s business partners in S4, on a half day work placement for the year, helped him develop skills for work.

In S4 Steven studied one – year programmes of learning in all subjects at either National 5 or National 4 level. He also studied National Certificate Units (NC) in personal development.

He left school at the end of S4 having secured a modern apprenticeship, through the school’s work programme, with the local building company he had worked for in S4. Through this he studied part – time for HNC in Construction Skills.

I never really wanted to stay on at school after S4. I really enjoyed technical subjects and although less interested in other subjects, I was still keen to do well and pass all the courses I started in S4. I was always looking for opportunities to gain work experience either through school or with friends and relatives and couldn’t wait to get out and start work on a more permanent basis. A modern apprenticeship will give me the opportunity to get hands-on experience as well as part-time study – and I get paid as well!
