SCILT is Scotland’s National Centre for Languages and provides high-quality professional learning to support the teaching and learning of languages across all education sectors and all parts of the country, in line with national priorities. SCILT is based within the Strathclyde Institute of Education. All SCILT opportunities are cost free.

Online professional learning for individual student and early career teachers

Bookable by individual early career teachers

  • ECT Primary Languages Signpost Sessions are regular online and informal opportunities to learn from and with colleagues at a similar career stage. Each has a different theme related to supporting multilingual learners or to teaching modern languages, according to Scotland's (1+2) languages policy. These sessions are an These signposts will point you in the right direction Share practical ideas, ask questions, troubleshoot challenges.
  • Open access online workshops during the year specifically for student, newly and recently qualified secondary and primary teachers. On themes that may include: preparing for interview for a secondary ML post, the importance of effective cluster working and transition from primary to secondary.

Group workshops for student and early career teachers

Local authority probation managers and ITE programme leads can book workshops for groups of student teachers, new or recently qualified teachers in their context.

Our team at SCILT provides opportunities for student and early career teachers to develop their languages pedagogy in tailored interactive workshops led by our experienced Professional Development Officers. 

  • Recent primary workshops have included: First steps in teaching primary languages; An introduction to multilingual approaches to primary pedagogy; Developing a family friendly approach to languages in your class; Active assessment in primary languages; Planning for progression in primary languages.
  • Recent secondary workshops have included: Teaching core skills (listening, talking, reading, writing); Effective classroom management; Support for application and interview for languages posts.

Workshops can be online or in person on request.  Please email SCILT directly with your request for a group workshop.
