This programme is designed to provide significant professional learning for individuals with an arts education practice (part-time, full-time or portfolio career). Years 1 and 2 of the programme focus on an equal balance of teaching practice enquiry and arts practice enquiry, culminating in a professional enquiry in year 3. The professional enquiry is a self-designed project that should impact the learner, their learners and their sector. Throughout the programme participants are required to build an evidence-base to demonstrate how their practice is informed by appropriate professional standards, learning theories, practice-based research and critical reflection.

The RCS is a recipient of the GTCS Award for Professional Learning Organisations.

Areas of study

MEd in Learning and Teaching in the Arts

This RCS programme recruits arts educators from a diverse range of formal and informal education contexts and offers practice-based modules in Educational Studies and Arts Education (music, drama, dance, production, film, visual art). You will be supported to develop your ability to provide inclusive and creative education experiences for your learners, and to demonstrate that your practice is informed by current literature, evidence-based research and appropriate professional standards.

For GTCS-registered teachers, the programme is mapped to the Standards for Career-Long Professional Learning and can also provide a route to build credits towards second subject registration in the expressive arts - dance, music, drama and art and design. Participants who successfully complete Year 2 of their studies will automatically gain GTCS Professional Recognition in Creative Arts Education.

For arts educators working in a further or higher education context with learners studying at SCQF Level 7 or above, this programme leads to Advance HE Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
