MSc Enhanced Practice in Education

The MSc Enhanced Practice in Education (Dumfries Campus) is designed for people at different stages in their professional careers from a range of backgrounds in education and allied fields such as social work, psychology, health and policing. There is a focus on collaborative learning, drawing on your own experiences and those of your academic colleagues. The programme will help you develop evidence-based leadership approaches and practices in critical reflection that you can apply in relation to your own practice. Research-informed courses will help you to consider practice and policy in the light of current educational thinking, and enable you to improve your own practice to become an effective practitioner. The optional courses ‘Critical perspectives on knowledge and power’ and ‘Critical thinking and communication’ will consolidate your learning. 

Areas of study

Programme participants take four core and two optional courses, followed by a research project. The research project provides an opportunity for you to identify an area of personal and professional interest to explore in more detail.

Core courses are:

  • Social Science Research Methods
  • Leadership and management
  • Reflective Practice
  • Working in an Interagency Environment.

In addition, a wide range of areas of interest may be addressed via individual project work, eg policy analysis, organisational cultures and structures, change management, sociology of education, philosophy of education, curriculum, assessment, additional support needs, etc.

Study options: full or part-time

You can choose to study either part-time or full-time:

  • part-time courses are normally studied over two to five calendar years
  • full-time courses are normally studied over one academic year (September to August).

In addition, individual courses may be taken on a stand-alone CPD basis.

Prior learning

Any Masters level qualifications acquired in the previous five years can be considered for prior credit, up to 40 credits. These credits would normally replace the elective courses on the programme. Individual course leaders will be able to advise you if your prior learning is eligible.

Costs

For UK and EU students:

  • Full-time fee is £9,000
  • Part-time fee is £1,000 per 20 credits

For international students:

  • Full-time fee is £19,350

Please note that there are currently 10 FTE Scottish Funding Council funded places (tuition fees only) available to Scottish-domiciled students.

Application process

Please check you meet the entry requirements for this programme before you begin your application. This is normally a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent qualification in education, sociology, psychology, social work or related subject. Applicants with a lower second honours degree may be accepted, if warranted by strong references and/or relevant work experience.

To apply for a postgraduate taught degree you must apply online.

As part of your online application, you also need to submit the following supporting documents:

  • a copy (or copies) of your official degree certificate(s) (if you have already completed your degree)
  • a copy (or copies) of your official academic transcript(s), showing full details of subjects studied and grades/marks obtained
  • official English translations of the certificate(s) and transcript(s)
  • one reference letter on headed paper
  • evidence of your English Language ability (if your first language is not English)
  • a copy of the photo page of your passport (non-EU students only).
