Award in Leadership

Leadership is key to the success of schools. All colleagues can contribute to good leadership, not just headteachers. This programme develops classroom practitioners - teacher leaders who are able to positively influence the teams in which they work.

Developed in partnership with Education Scotland, the 4 day programme applies leadership principles to the contemporary issues and challenges in education. Using action learning and peer learning approaches, we identify new approaches to improving your practice. It enables educational professionals to develop reflective practice techniques to ensure their on going development as classroom practitioners, and develops their own leadership ability.

After attending the 4 days, and on successfully completing one reflective assessment, learners can gain the Award in Leadership (SCQF 9).

The programme has benefits for both the individual and the organisation.

Individuals can have the time and space to consider their approach to leadership, and share and discuss issues with other education professionals. The activities within the 4 days can enable individuals to gain a wider knowledge of different leadership styles and theories, and prepare a plan of action to take forward their own professional development. Education Scotland report that past learners have used their learning to progress into promoted posts.

The organisation can benefit in a practical sense from the networking of colleagues, the sharing of good practice and enhanced capacity and capability for leadership. Education Scotland report that the positive impact of the programme is evidenced in school inspections.

Both the organisation and the individual will benefit, as participants will have a better understanding of how to motivate and lead staff more effectively, and lead future changes in their area of responsibility.

This would benefit a wide range of staff within the education sector. As well as teachers and middle leaders, it would suit those who are working with a range of people both inside and outside of the school community, including specialist providers operating in and around schools.

The programme is available in both English and Gaelic medium.

This is delivered in 4 days, and can be structured around the requirements of the appropriate Education authority. The normal approach is 2 sessions of 2 days with a gap between. It is also available as two 24-hour residentials, especially where staff are located over a very wide geographical area.
