Edinburgh Learns: Leading a Learning Community

Published 09/12/2020.  Last updated 25/11/2024

Edinburgh Learns asserts that it is the aim of every teacher to deliver high quality teaching and learning. It is the single most important feature of the reflective practitioner and the aspect that is kept under constant review as staff strive to improve skills.

Leading a Learning Community is a two-session course (four hours of face-to-face professional learning in total). The course supports the development of teacher leadership in teaching and learning. We explore the why, how and what of improving teaching and learning, and provide practical skills, strategies and ideas to help achieve this.

Key learning

  • Leadership - understanding our why, how and what.
  • Improvement - Using why, how and what when planning improvement
  • Leading a team - Tuckman's five stages of team development
  • Effective team meetings - the seven-step meeting process
  • Coaching conversations - the GROW model.

This course aims to:

  • help practitioners who lead improvements in teaching and learning (across a stage, level, faculty or whole school) develop a clear set of skills and strategies to help identify priorities for improving teaching and learning and lead improvements through enquiry
  • provide them with generic skills, such as leading meetings and coaching conversations to help lead teams and support individuals successfully, leading to improvements in the quality of learners’ experiences.

This professional learning is aimed at teachers who are leading teaching and learning across a team. This includes secondary leaders (CLs, those who lead improvements in teaching and learning and aspiring leaders of teaching and learning) and primary leaders (PTs, DHTs and those who take on a leadership role in teaching and learning).

Four hours (2 x 2-hour sessions)
