Engaging Families in Children's Learning

The programme is designed to support education professionals to develop clear understanding and effective strategies to support engagement of families in their children’s education and learning. The programme brings policy and legislation to life, providing delegates with a clear pathway to link their practice and values to this critical policy area.

Engaging Families is a structured approach to sharing strategies designed to support schools and learning contexts to engage families effectively. Led by Connect’s Executive Director, Trainer and education associate, the module’s online delivery enables practitioners to develop a deeper understanding of:

  • the research behind the drive for engagement with families
  • the legislation/policy which requires it and
  • the approaches that support family engagement and lead to improved outcomes for learners.

Participants enjoy access to online course materials which can be completed as part of an individual’s planned CLPL. Facilitated online collaborative sessions provide opportunities to explore challenges, take part in professional discussion and critical reflection. Delegates share good practice, evaluate progress and plan for improvement. The module forms part of a suite of courses, each designed to develop knowledge and understanding of effective practice in family engagement. Included is an Engagement Stocktake resource to be completed with colleagues and others: this audits existing parental engagement activities as a starting point for each individual’s action plan.

The programme is designed to support classroom teachers, family learning and support workers, as well as senior staff in all settings to develop clear understanding and effective strategies to support engagement of families in their children’s education and learning.

As an indication, delegates will be expected to commit 10-14 hours for the various elements of this module, over approximately 6-8 weeks. The module also includes a follow-up coaching session. When this is completed, a certificate is issued.
