Woodland Activity Leader Training (WALT)
Wild Things’ Woodland Activity Leader Training (WALT) is a unique Level 2 accredited training course providing a Scottish alternative to Forest School. You will learn the essential outdoor skills needed to lead your own exciting outdoor sessions for all ages and abilities. You will gain the skills, knowledge, and expertise to deliver inspiring environmental/outdoor education, tailored to the needs of your students in a wide variety of contexts.
You will learn the key principles of:
- safe outdoor group management
- how to use and teach the use of a variety of sharp tools
- bushcraft techniques including safe fire lighting and shelter-building
- animal tracking
- games, conservation, and wellbeing activities
Simultaneously, you will deepen and enrich your own knowledge, appreciation for and understanding of woodland ecology, including a wealth of naturalist knowledge covering everything from invertebrates, plants and trees to woodland mammals and birds.
Who is it for
This programme has been designed specifically for current or aspiring educators from all fields who wish to enliven their lessons with experiential, exploratory or therapeutic learning experiences. The course is also ideal for educators seeking to develop student understanding of ecology, biosciences, climate change and other modern environmental challenges. Qualified teachers can utilise the course as CPD through our Professional Recognition by the General Teaching Council for Scotland. The course is especially valuable for primary and secondary school teachers who wish to utilise outdoor learning to achieve their curricular goals in new and exciting ways, however, educators working with young people with special, emotional or behavioural needs will also find this training incredibly valuable.
Duration
Our in-person Woodland Activity Leader Training course is 7 days in length. Alternatively, you can book onto our e-learning course and undertake all the theoretical components before completing a three-day Practical Module in-person. Wild things will also deliver bespoke training courses on request.
Coastal Activity Leader Training (CALT)
Wild Things’ Coastal Activity Leader Training (CALT) is a unique Level 3 accredited training course providing a Scottish alternative to Forest School training for those living or working in coastal environments. You will learn the essential outdoor skills needed to lead your own exciting outdoor sessions for all ages and abilities. You will gain the skills, knowledge and expertise to deliver inspiring environmental/outdoor education, tailored to the needs of your students in a wide variety of coastal contexts.
You will learn the key principles of:
- safe outdoor group management
- how to use and teach the use of a variety of sharp tools
- bushcraft techniques including safe fire lighting and shelter building
- animal tracks and signs and an abundance of games
- conservation and wellbeing activities
Simultaneously, you will deepen and enrich your own knowledge, appreciation for and understanding of coastal and marine ecology, including a wealth of naturalist knowledge covering everything from molluscs, anemones, seaweeds and coastal plants to cetaceans and coastal birds.
