The PG Certificate in Leadership and Learning: Middle Leadership and Management is a 60 credit postgraduate programme comprising two courses.

Course 1 (20 credits), Developing as a Middle Leader and Manager, introduces and explores the complex relationship between the role of the middle leader and manager, and other roles within the school organisation. It critically examines middle leadership and management within local, national and international contexts.

The structure of the course is designed to support participants’ critical reflection on theory, policy, strategy and experience to inform their own professional practice. Participants also critically review their self-evaluation against the Standard for Middle Leadership and Management and identify key priorities for their professional learning.

Course 2 (40 credits), Leading Change and School Improvement (Standard for Middle Leadership and Management), explores major themes and issues concerning school leadership and management related to department/school improvement. Wider international and national perspectives are discussed, contextualised within the participant's own professional setting. Emphasis is placed on developing the knowledge, understandings, skills and competences associated with leading from the middle of a school organisation. Key processes for conducting a critical analysis of a department/school's capacity to change as well as planning for school improvement are considered.

The structure of the course is designed to support participants' critical reflection on theory, policy, strategy and experience to inform their own professional practice, the practice of their departments/schools and improve outcomes for learners.

This PG Certificate is a 60 credit postgraduate programme that sits within the Masters in Leadership and Learning. This practice based programme is designed to enhance participants’ professional knowledge, understanding, skills and actions, so that practice and its impact on learners and learning can be critically considered. This new and innovative programme utilises a range of blended learning approaches and collaborative learning practices. This postgraduate programme articulates with the General Teaching Council’s Standards for Leadership and Management. As such, it is designed to support participant’s professional learning and career aspirations.

The programme is designed for teachers, normally with a minimum of three years’ teaching experience, seeking to develop their knowledge, understanding and practice of middle leadership and management. As such, participants require current and regular access to conduct work-based learning and practice in a middle leadership and management role (or equivalent).

Up to 2 years to complete the PG Certificate. On completion, participants may choose to progress on to further study through the Masters in Leadership and Learning.
