Reciprocal Reading

Forth Valley and West Lothian RIC works towards closing the socio-economic gap in literacy through collaborative approaches that build practitioner capacity to deliver high quality learning experiences.

Rated as high impact on the EEF Toolkit, Reciprocal Reading is a structured approach to teaching reading strategies that can be used to improve reading comprehension. Developed through partnership working with the University of Stirling, this programme instils a deeper understanding of a pedagogical approach that engages learners and leads to improved outcomes.

Benefits of the programme include:

  • thorough understanding of Reciprocal Reading as a pedagogy
  • support in the practical application of Reciprocal Reading
  • collaborative working with other Reciprocal Reading practitioners
  • increased confidence in using improvement methodology
  • opportunities for coaching to support the intervention
  • improved outcomes in reading for children and young people.

Primary teachers and English teachers in the Forth Valley and West Lothian RIC.

The original programme has been adapted. The online version is tailored to suit each school with a 6-12 week duration that includes a combination of online sessions and activities to be done in school or at home (1-2 hours per week).
