Free face-to-face and online learning for teachers in Scotland about online safety and digital citizenship. The programme covers the latest tech trends and safety issues, curriculum links and materials, professional skills and key resources to support teachers.

The ‘Safe and Empowered: Responding to a Digital Generation’ training will support practitioners to:

• understand the technological context of today’s children and wider technology trends
• gain knowledge of the full range of online issues affecting young people, along with relevant advice, resources and sources of support. 
  Topics include:
  - friendships and relationships (bullying, sexting, pornography, sexual exploitation)
  - physical and mental health (digital childhood, screen time, gaming, gambling, self-image, social media)
  - privacy, rights and reputation (data, fraud, rights, oversharing, cyber resilience)
  - media and information literacy (fake news, critical thinking extremism)
  - professional online reputation.
• identify a range of educational materials available, linked to Curriculum for Excellence and set within the Scottish policy and legal context.  This includes referencing materials from leading organisations in the field, including CEOP
• develop skills in identifying and responding to risk
• identify personal values which impact on professional practice
• consider how to better engage parents and carers on this topic.

This programme is suitable for educators at all stages of their career in early years settings, primary and secondary schools.

Phase 1 of the project runs until March 2020. Activities comprise:

Practitioner training events: Nine one-day events to be delivered across Scotland. Minimum eight delegates (max 20; target 15) per event. Delegates who can’t attend in person can access two half-day webinars instead. Attendees receive a delegate pack including activities, personal action plan and links to key resources. Attendees also receive a parents’ presentation that can be used by schools.

Webinars and podcasts (six): Focused webinars will be delivered on key topics, providing the latest research and resources, and enabling Q&A interaction with participants. Podcasts will involve interviews with relevant organisations across Scotland and potentially internationally.

Phase 2 of the project runs until March 2021.  Activities comprise:

Practitioner training events: Online and face-to-face events delivered across Scotland. The online programme comprises two 2-hour webinars. Attendees receive a delegate pack including activities, personal action plan and links to key resources. Attendees also receive a parents’ presentation that can be used by schools.

In-service training events: Schools can book training for their in-service days, either online or (budget dependent) face-to-face.

Webinars and podcasts: Focused webinars are delivered on key topics, providing the latest research and resources, and enabling Q&A interaction with participants. Podcasts involve interviews with relevant organisations across Scotland and potentially internationally, as well as young people.  There are four webinars and four podcast recordings already available, from Phase 1 of the programme.
