Scotland’s Languages Leadership Programme (SLLP)
Scotland’s Languages Leadership Programme (SLLP) is designed to support the strengthening of leadership capacity at all levels and to underpin provision of language learning for all children and young people attending Scotland’s schools. SLLP Participants engage with policy, research and curriculum, and they are supported to develop their skills in strategic thinking and critical reflection.
This programme is co-constructed and facilitated by Education Scotland and SCILT, Scotland’s National Centre for Languages and is supported by LANGS, the Languages Network Group Scotland, comprising local authority lead officers for languages. This partnership allows participants access to Masters level professional learning opportunities from across the country.
Since 2016, the programme has carried Professional Recognition: leading language education from The General Teaching Council Scotland (GTCS). The SLLP received Awards for Excellence in Professional Learning from the GTCS in 2017 and 2018.
Programme content is research-informed, up-to-date and relevant to the work of educators who lead (or aspire to lead) languages education in their context.
Scotland’s Languages Leadership Programme has three elements:
- SLLP Core. Two days of professional learning with Education Scotland colleagues and invited guests.
- SLLP Choice. A varied programme of workshops offered by SCILT, Education Scotland Languages Team, LANGS colleagues and others with expertise in aspects of leadership of languages education. In addition, ongoing critical reflection, with four journal entries to be submitted and assessed against Masters level criteria. Participants receive personalised support from critical friends throughout. Critical friends are previous participants and they receive dedicated professional learning in supporting teacher learning at this level online.
- SLLP Recall Day. Participants share their SLLP learning journey with peers and supporters.
Options on completion:
- Become an SLLP critical friend
- Join SLLP Alumni network
- Use GTCS award of Professional Recognition from this programme as evidence of Masters level professional learning that may be accepted as accredited prior learning for admission to university based courses – i.e. MEd pathways at University of Strathclyde.
The programme is aimed at aspiring or in-post language leads in primary, secondary or special education settings in English and Gaelic medium education in Scotland, as well as local authority officers and teacher educators at Scottish universities.
Applications are welcome from GTCS registered practitioners with a minimum of 3 years teaching experience.
Approximately 12 months. Programme opens mid/end June and runs through to mid-May.
