Supporting learners with difficulties in mathematics

Published 05/06/2025.  Last updated 25/07/2025

This anytime learning webinar series looks at a range of inclusive pedagogical approaches designed to support learners with learning differences that create challenges for learners in making progress in mathematics.

The programme is suitable for any practitioner who is supporting children and young people in their development of mathematical knowledge and skills. It may also be of interest to practitioners in adult education.

This programme is a legacy resource developed over three years and can now be accessed as anytime learning.

  • Year 1 focussed on Dyscalculia, looking at the then newly published Scottish definition and supporting resources.
  • Year 2 covered a range of approaches to support learning in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Year 3 covered the learning and teaching of fractions, decimal fractions and percentages.

Each recorded session is around an hour long and linked to each session is a range of links and further reading that can be explored. The resource is entirely flexible and can be accessed in whole or in part.

  • The learning is accessed via Thinglink, with each year’s programme available through a single landing page.
  • Each module consists of a number of videos (housed on YouTube) with links to additional reading and useful websites.
  • Each video include reflective questions and ideas for follow-up tasks.

“I am not a maths teacher, but teaching maths is in my role in ASN.  The concepts for teaching were very useful”
Secondary Class Teacher

“The ideas shared, resources and links to online resources that children can use independently have increased my passion in teaching in this area.  I will be sharing the links to resources and readings.”
Primary Class Teacher

“There are a lot of additional links with helpful reading material to digest.  Lots of information gets covered per session and it’s well presented and well explained. It has given me the confidence to try different approaches.”
