Enquiry in Education

Welcome to the Enquiry in Education online resource.

Enquiry in Education is an open access resource designed to support all educators to develop leadership of learning through an enquiring approach.

There are three core sections which follow a basic practitioner enquiry cycle:

  1. Planning and defining your enquiry question.
  2. Conducting your enquiry and collecting evidence.
  3. Reviewing and sharing your enquiry.

These are complemented by examples of enquiry in action from previous Education Scotland programme participants as well as examples from other schools and settings.

Self-directed professional learning activities that dig deeper into aspects of enquiry are clearly signposted.

You will also find information about additional opportunities for those who would prefer to attend an online introduction to enquiry session.

And finally, there are details of how you can share your enquiry with us. Those who choose to send their enquiry will receive an Education Scotland completion certificate.

Practitioner enquiry is a central theme within all educators’ professional standards.

Community learning and development

The CLD Competences (cldstandardscouncil.org) describe competent, critically reflective practitioners who are aware of their values and principles. Practitioner enquiry supports you to integrate your knowledge, skills, values and attitudes in your work work.

Early learning and childcare

Early learning and childcare practitioners may use one of the following standards to support reflections on their professional learning:

The Standard for Childhood Practice (2015) (sssc.uk.com) describes how managers and lead practitioners can access and apply relevant research and enquiry-based findings.

The Social Services Children and Young People (sssc.uk.com) Pre-school services or education provision section and in particular core unit 'HSC 033 Develop your practice through reflection and learning'. This outlines how you can use learning opportunities to improve your knowledge and practice, including learning from day-to-day experiences.

Teachers

Depending on your career stage you may use any one (or more than one) of the Professional Standards for Teachers - The General Teaching Council for Scotland (gtcs.org.uk). All of the Professional Standards, with professional values at the heart, support and promote partnership, leadership, enquiry and professional learning. They describe teacher professionalism in Scotland, our ‘way of being’.

Your feedback is very important to us and will be used to improve our professional learning offers in the future.

Please take time to complete our evaluation form, thank you.
