Cost of the School Day: Abronhill Primary School and Nursery Class
Background
In Abronhill Primary School and Nursery Class, the aim is to provide all children with experiences and opportunities that enable them to achieve their full potential, have fun and prepare them for life beyond primary school. These opportunities sometimes have a cost attached to them and the school believes that no family should ever be in a position where they struggle financially because of the ‘Cost of the School Day’.
What was done
The school has produced a Cost of the School Day Action Plan and Policy which has helped families throughout the school. Through its Cost of the School Day policy, Abronhill PS aims to:
- Provide information to parents on how the school can relieve the pressures families may face due to the Cost of the School Day.
- Ensure that there are no barriers to learning caused by financial issues and that every child has equal access to opportunities at school.
- Demonstrate the approaches taken to minimise poverty stigma.
- Promote the assistance the school can provide to families to help them access financial support beyond the school day

Improvement questions

- How can you use PEF to poverty proof your school?
- To what extent do all staff have a sound understanding of the need to ensure the cost of the school day does not exclude some children and young people from the opportunities you promote?
