How can we create a Language and Communication Supportive Environment in Early Learning and Childcare settings?: How can we ensure that ELC settings are language and communication supportive environments?
A language and communication supportive environment self-evaluation tool can be used to identify strengths, opportunities and areas for improvement.
Language and communication supportive environment tools are designed with early learning and childcare settings in mind but can also be adapted for use in home learning environments such as those provided by registered childminders.
Choosing a self-evaluation tool
Various language and communication supportive environment self-evaluation tools are available online and several have been developed by Scottish Local Authority areas, often with the involvement of Speech and Language Therapy teams. Tools vary in complexity and length. A list of high quality, locally available tools can be found in Appendix 2.
Based on a review of evidence and best practice, this guide highlights elements that should be included in a self-evaluation of language and communication supportive environment. Appendix 1 can be used to support benchmarking of any locally used tool or tool in development.
This resource focuses specifically on aspects of environment known to support the development of language and communication skills.
Those identifying a self-evaluation tool should also consider wider developmental needs of babies and children in their setting. Areas such as sensory development, emotional regulation and executive function are not within the remit of this guide but may be important considerations when establishing an inclusive learning environment for all.
Carrying out a self-evaluation
Self-evaluation should involve all staff in the setting and should include direct observation and self-reflection. Adult-child interactions are best captured using video recording, allowing staff to individually reflect on their own practice. A specialist colleague such as a speech and language therapist or equity and excellence lead might be invited to contribute to the evaluation.
