Croft Street Hub (CSH) - Midlothian Council: Identifying needs and aims

This section outlines the need for the project and how the basis of partnership working was established. It also includes the overall ambition of the partnership and an overview of those involved.

The need for the project was identified from a pilot involving youth work and schools. Youth work staff were supporting a group of boys in S3 who were offending in the community and were at risk of leaving school with no qualifications or positive destination. Originally, external funding supported this work, but as the project developed it led to a much wider need in Midlothian being identified. This included the negative impact of COVID-19 on the routines, engagement and mental health and wellbeing of young people. A number of young people were identified who had not returned to school or left the house since lockdown, promoting isolation, polarised views and a loss of social and educational capital.

The overall ambition of the Croft Street Hub  is to provide alternative provision for young people who are not attending or engaging in school, or with their local community. CSH offer a different physical space to learn in, as well as an alternative curriculum. Young people are supported to access and achieve a range of qualifications, wellbeing support and positive destinations. The provision is tailored to the needs of individuals who require a bespoke approach to their curricular pathways.
