​​Curriculum for Excellence has made explicit the expectation that all staff have a responsibility to contribute to the literacy development of learners. However, not all education professionals are fully confident in their own understanding of how language works. The Knowledge of Language resource provides staff with a way of accessing further information about some of the common features of our language.

How to use this resource

It must be stressed that this resource is intended as a basic guide: it is neither exhaustive nor definitive and is designed to be ‘dipped into’ rather than read from start to finish – use what you think you need.

It covers sections on:

• Parts of speech.
• Punctuation.
• Grammar and syntax.
• Tricky spellings.
• Common confusions.

The resource also has a 'Test yourself' section along with an answer booklet.
