​​This resource is an interdisciplinary learning journey which uses Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) second level expressive arts and literacy and English as the curriculum focus for exploring the history and culture of the gypsy/traveller community and reflecting on the impact it has had on Scotland.

How to use this resource

This learning resource has three learning experiences which can be used to promote equality and inclusion within society and support and challenge children and young people to reflect on their own and some of societies attitudes and prejudices which may exist. They include:

• learning experience A: the history of the Gypsy/Traveller community in Scotland
• learning experience B: tackling prejudice through learning
• learning experience C: celebrating together

The three learning experiences are flexible and provide a range of engaging approaches  for teachers.  Each experience outlines:

• key learning
• possible learning opportunities and tasks
• possible evidence
• reflecting on learning
• extended learning
• useful resources

The learning experiences will open opportunities across literacy and English, social studies, expressive arts and health and wellbeing.

Improvement questions

• How do we know our curriculum reflects and includes appropriate learning and teaching resources to promote equality and inclusion?
• Does our interdisciplinary learning include the  history and culture of gypsy/travellers in Scotland and recognise that the gypsy/traveller community is a diverse group of communities which includes, Scottish gypsies/travellers, showmen, new travellers and Roma?
• How do we know that our curriculum provides appropriate opportunities for our learners to reflect on their own understanding of the gypsy/travelling Community?
