Education Scotland Associate - Anti-Racism Coordinator
We are seeking applications for Education Scotland Associates (ESA) with a specialism in Anti-Racist Education. The posts are part-time, pro rata and based throughout Scotland. The base location can be flexible. Working as an Education Scotland Associate offers a unique and rewarding opportunity to contribute to education nationally and to support professional learning in anti-racist practice. You will be joining a growing network of ESAs supporting Education Scotland’s reformed focus on equity and excellence for all.
The Education Scotland Associate role reflects our commitment to increasing professional engagement in national improvement. ESAs support systemic improvement with a particular focus area—in this case, anti-racist education—drawing on their expertise, experience as practitioners, and their knowledge of the Scottish education landscape.
ESAs will work with us on an ‘as required’ basis for up to 15 days per academic year, while maintaining their existing role in a school or setting. To prevent any conflicts of interest, current Associate Inspectors are not eligible for this role.
This role will require engaging with stakeholders across Scotland. Some travel may be necessary, including occasional overnight stays.
Available position
Education Scotland Associate: Anti-Racist Coordination (multiple posts).
The Anti-Racist Education ESA will work closely with Education Scotland’s Senior Education Officers and national partners involved in the delivery of anti-racist education. They will coordinate and support the network of anti-racist mentors working across local authorities and education establishments in Scotland.
The ESA will be involved in:
- Facilitating a national network of anti-racist mentors to share effective practice.
- Supporting capacity-building through professional learning aligned to national guidance and the outcomes of the Anti-Racism in Education Programme.
- Collating and disseminating examples of impactful anti-racist education.
- Engaging with local authorities and stakeholders to support the embedding of anti-racist approaches in policy, curriculum, and pedagogy, including through the Curriculum Improvement Cycle.

Various locations across Scotland.
Closing date and interviews
The closing date for this role is Monday 23rd June and successful applicants will be notified by Friday 27th June. This role will be recruited through the applications, but interviews may be used.

Endorsement

Engagement Days
Maximum of 15 days per year (subject to agreement with the local authority).
Engagement may be concentrated over a few weeks or spread across the year depending on work requirements.
Reimbursement
A reimbursement of £196 per day will be made to the local authority upon completion of a project or the full allocation of days.
Essential Requirements
Applicants must demonstrate:
- A sound understanding of anti-racist education within the Scottish context.
- Current involvement in anti-racist work within education (e.g., leading, mentoring, delivering professional learning, or contributing to policy/practice development).
- Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills.
- A commitment to equity, social justice and the realisation of children’s rights.
- Experience leading professional learning and mentoring educators in anti-racist practice.
Required Experience
The successful applicant must have:
- Experience facilitating and supporting collaborative professional learning.
- A record of developing or delivering anti-racist or equity-based work in a school, local authority, or national capacity.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work with diverse groups and stakeholders.
- Understanding of the challenges and enablers related to implementing anti-racist education.
- Experience of influencing positive change at strategic and/or operational levels.
ESAs play a key role in improving education across Scotland. They:
- Engage in professional dialogue with practitioners, stakeholders, and leadership teams.
- Identify and promote highly effective anti-racist practice.
- Gather and analyse information to support improvement, including qualitative and quantitative data.
- Stay up to date with evolving national policy and global developments in anti-racist education.
- Undertake professional learning to strengthen their own expertise.
- Challenge discrimination, promote equality, and model inclusive practice.
