Overview

We are currently seeking applications for Associate Inspectors of Education. The posts are on a part-time, pro rata basis and will be based throughout Scotland, although base location can be flexible.

Associate Inspectors make an important contribution to our inspection programmes, drawing on their experience as educators, their specialist skills, and their educational and system knowledge

Inspections and other scrutiny activities are independent and impartial. Associate Inspectors work alongside HM Inspectors to observe practice at first-hand, engage in professional dialogue and report objectively on the quality of education and capacity to improve. A core focus of the role is to promote improvement as well as providing assurance to stakeholders on the quality of education.

Associate Inspectors work as part of inspection teams to carry out external evaluation across a range of sectors and specific themes as part of national thematic work.

Associate Inspectors are privileged to have the opportunity to observe practice and engage with stakeholders throughout Scotland. As such, they are required to undertake travel, which may include regularly staying overnight away from home.

The main responsibility of an Associate Inspector is to support improvement in standards and quality in education through external evaluation and inspection activities, identifying and disseminating highly effective practice and building capacity to support continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Gather and analyse information, including statistical data, from a wide range of sources.
  • Observe learning at first hand and review documentation.
  • Speak with learners.
  • Engage in professional discussions with practitioners, stakeholders, and senior managers.
  • Identify and promote highly effective practice.
  • Lead on aspects of an inspection and draft sections of the inspection report
  • Work closely with HM Inspectors to support the production of reports to inform stakeholders of the overall quality and strengths in key aspects of education and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Maintain a high level of awareness of current and developing policy and practice in specific aspects of education provision.
  • Engage in appropriate professional learning and development to build and maintain professional knowledge and expertise.
  • Take account of equality and diversity in all aspects of work, model good practice in challenging discrimination and promoting equality to encourage positive outcomes across all education aspects and services.
  • Significant experience of working in a learning and teaching and/or leadership capacity within education with a passion for making a difference for children and a proven positive impact on improving outcomes for learners.
  • High quality interpersonal skills, confidence in dealing with a range of contacts and ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Excellent skills in analysis, evaluation, and communication.
  • Strong understanding of emerging developments and changes in education and inspection and the ability to keep up to date across all aspects of Scottish education.

Communication and engagement: Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing. Considering the needs of diverse audiences, appropriate media, and the role of technology in contributing to enhanced communications. They converse with a wide range of stakeholders. In all oral communication the message has to be clear and unambiguous.

Developing and applying professional knowledge: Continue to develop expertise and knowledge, both within their specialism and in wider areas of education.

Improving performance: Being clear about objectives and priorities and focusing on results. Promoting change and making improvements that help the organisation, and the education system, achieve its goals.

Analysis and use of evidence: Ability to use relevant evidence, recognising validity and limitations, in reaching professional judgements and providing related support.
