Progression in modern languages – Third to Fourth Level

This suite of resources provides support and advice on approaches to the planning and delivery of teaching and learning which will promote development of the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding to progress from Third to Fourth level across the four skills of listening, talking, reading and writing in modern languages.

This resource comprises:

  • Slides, with advice on progression in language learning demonstrating progression from Third to Fourth level;
  • A generic planning document, involving all 4 language skills and mapped to the Es and Os, which practitioners can use for their own planning and to map progress (Third to Fourth level);
  • A suite of support materials, with suggestions on approaches to teaching and learning, which will promote development of the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding to progress from Third to Fourth level across the four skills of listening, talking , reading and writing.

*NB Examples are given in French, as this is the most popular L2

Improvement questions

Individually or as a team, consider the following improvement questions in your own context:

  1. To what extent does your current planning reflect the progression exemplified from Third to Fourth level?
  2. To what extent do your pedagogy and learning strategies ensure progression across the four skills of listening, talking, reading and writing?
