Emotional Literacy

This programme provides an opportunity for professional development in the understanding and practice of emotional literacy. The taught elements are delivered over 8 sessions, each one building on the previous ones, with a focus on a different aspect of emotional literacy. Within the programme there is a requirement to meet in Action Learning Sets in between the taught sessions.

This format gives practitioners time to work together, to discuss and process new knowledge and learning and to develop the key skills and frameworks that support the development of practice in promoting positive relationships. Participants are encouraged to focus on elements of their practice, appropriate to their roles and responsibilities that would benefit from further development in line with the appropriate professional requirements and competencies.

On completion of the programme participants will be able to:

  • Better understand their own emotions and the links between emotional affect, cognition and their teaching practice.
  • Understand how to be an Emotional Coach for children and young people as/when required.
  • Know when and how to develop Emotional Literacy in the school in order to build an effective, self-esteeming culture that promotes positive relationships at all levels.
  • Administer, interpret feedback and apply assessment measures for emotional literacy.
  • Act as an effective and professional Emotional Literacy coordinator within their school.
  • Link themselves to the leading edge theories of Emotional Literacy Development.
  • Extend their own value to their school.
