Coaching research
Coaching and mentoring research aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the theory, research and practice of coaching, which educators may be interested in, to complement the development of their skills.
The following resources provide research studies and other readings to develop your knowledge and understanding of the theory, research and practice of coaching in education.
- The Effect of Teacher Coaching on Instruction and Achievement: A Meta-Analysis of the Causal Evidence by Kraft, Blazar & Hogan (2018) - A landmark meta-analysis examining the impact of teacher coaching on instructional practice and learner outcomes. The review found substantial positive effects on teacher practice and smaller but meaningful effects on pupil achievement.

A comprehensive synthesis of evidence on mentoring and coaching for teachers, identifying key features of effective practice and implications for policy and professional learning.
- The Power of Coaching in the Professional Learning and Development of School Leaders by Collins, Murphy & Brown (2025) - A systematic review exploring the role of coaching in school leader development and identifying factors that enable successful coaching programmes.
- Sustaining a Vital Profession; the impact of Leadership Coaching in schools by Rachel Lofthouse and Ruth Whiteside accessed at CollectivED Working Papers Issue 10, March 2020.
- Professional Learning Research Insight: Building Professional Coaching Relationships by Australian Education Research Organisation (2025) - A research summary exploring the characteristics and conditions that support productive coaching relationships within educational settings
- Reflective practice: Know You More coaches, Dr Jeremy Hinks and Mandy Murphy offer their thoughts on reflective practice as a means of helping yourself and others to navigate complex change.
- Instructional coaching: why it matters, and how to make it matter by Harry Fletcher-Wood and Artur Taevere, May 2022 is an accessible overview of instructional coaching, outlining the research evidence and practical considerations for implementation.
- Instructional coaching in K-12: A literature review and discussion questions, Institute of Educational Sciences, U.S. Dept of Education, March 2019 - A detailed review of instructional coaching research, exploring key features of effective coaching and practical implementation considerations.
Developing Future Black Minority, Ethnic (BME) Leader’s Self Efficacy through Mentoring and Coaching by Lizana Oberholzer accessed at CollectivED Working Papers Issue 9, October 2019.
- CollectivED - The Centre for Mentoring, Coaching and Professional Learning at The Carnegie School of Education at Leeds Beckett University - regularly publish research reports, working papers written by practitioners, blog posts, and podcasts/videos – all with a focus on coaching, mentoring and professional learning.
- Growth Coaching International have compiled a list of all English-language research studies and other useful resources for coaching in education, e.g. articles in academic journals, books, book chapters, reports, websites etc. Entries in the compilation are hyperlinked to the original article, or an abstract, and the resource is updated regularly – available at Resources for Coaching in Education - Dropbox Link. In due course, a similar resource may be compiled for research into mentoring in education.
- University repositories often hold full copies of published research studies which are otherwise available only in subscription journals. Some research studies about coaching in education are available in the repository of the University of East London.
