Additional Support for Learning

The Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act (the 2004 Act) sets out:

  • the rights of children, young people and parents
  • the duties of education authorities
  • a legal framework for identifying and addressing ASL

The Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act (2009) amends the 2004 Act.

What additional support for learning is

The definition of additional support is broad and inclusive. Children and young people may need short or long‑term additional support due to:

  • the learning environment
  • family circumstances
  • health or disability needs
  • social and emotional factors

Additional support for children and young people is not dependent on a formal diagnosis.
