Section 2(1) of the Scottish Schools (Parental Involvement) Act 2006 (legislation.gov.uk) requires every local authority to prepare a strategy for parental involvement. The strategy should describe how the local authority will fulfil its duty to:

  • involve parents and meaningfully engage them in their own child’s education
  • give advice and information to parents in respect of their own child
  • promote the establishment of parent councils and support their operation
  • take account of the needs of care experienced children
  • promote equal opportunities and be inclusive of all parents
  • establish a complaints procedure in respect of the authority’s functions and in line with the revised complaints handling procedure (2012)

The local authority parental involvement and engagement strategy should complement arrangements for integrated working. It should also consider other professionals and agencies working with care experienced children, young people and their families.
