​How to use this learning and assessment resource to improve practice

This learning and teaching idea can be used to teach skills in researching, analysing and communicating information about local place names. The strong responsibility of all link (Literacy across learning) encourages learners to understand and compare a range of maps, e.g. read a key, know that maps are texts that give us information about the land. 

The resource can also be used to explore the historical, geographical and linguistic nature of place and street names in a local community within Scotland. It provides the opportunity for learners to develop skills in reading maps to walk common routes in their local area whilst exploring their built and natural heritage. The context for learning uses social studies as its lead curriculum area. However, there is a strong literacy focus through gathering and evaluating information.
